How to Check for a Program on Microsoft Windows

Question:
How do I check to see if I have a specific program installed on my computer running Microsoft Windows?
Answer:
To check if you have a specific program installed on your computer, perform the following:
Microsoft Windows 7:
  1. Click the Start Menu
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Follow the steps for the view you are in:
    • Category View (7-8 categories): Under Programs and Features or Programs, click Uninstall a program
    • Icon View (about 40-50 icons): Click Programs and Features
  4. Search the list of programs for the one you are looking for (such as Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Java, etc.)
Microsoft Windows 8:
  1. Go to the Desktop (click Desktop tile from Start Screen)
  2. Press Window Key + X to open the shortcut menu
  3. Select Programs and Features
  4. Search the list of programs for the one you are looking for (such as Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Java, etc.)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 and 10:
  1. Go to the Desktop (click Desktop tile from Start Screen)
  2. Right-click on the rectangular Start button at the lower-left-hand corner of the screen
  3. Select Programs and Features or Apps and Features (depending on your version) at the top of the list  
  4. Search the list of programs for the one you are looking for (such as Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Java, etc.)
